Types of Chocolates in India

Visit the market, and you will find that there are three types of chocolates in India:

1. Thick Center-Type Chocolates

Examples: Five Star, Bar One, Snickers

You might consider them healthy as a source of energy or something, but how do they fool us with their marketing? Let’s understand this.

Everyone knows chocolates are unhealthy. But the worst thing is that many brands showcase healthy food options that a customer can eat without knowing their misleading marketing strategies.

Snickers

Snickers’ tagline is ‘Hunger ache, acchon ko badal deta hai’. This markets it as something that can reduce your hunger, indirectly marketing it as a meal rather than a dessert. But it’s a dessert, not a healthy meal replacement. It has high calorie and sugar quantities and only satisfies your temporary hunger without providing the nutritional value of a whole meal.

2. Wafer-Type Chocolates

Examples: Munch, KitKat, Perk

Fun fact: Did you know that KitKat in India and Australia are different? In India, KitKat has only 16.2% milk solids, while in Australia, KitKat contains 25% milk solids. Cocoa solids in India are at 4.5%, whereas in Australia, they are 22%.

3. Bar-Type Chocolates

Examples: Dairy Milk, Milky Bar

If you were a kid in the 90s, you know the Milky Bar tagline, “Milky Bar, Give me the power.” It signifies that by eating chocolate, children will become powerful, which is misleading. It’s only a marketing tactic that attracts children and parents, but in reality, it comes with high sugar and fat content, which can be harmful.

The bottom line is that all these three types of chocolates are more of sugar candies than real chocolate. When I say real chocolate, I don’t mean those bitter dark chocolates that have 99% cocoa. I’m talking about chocolate which is healthy but at the same time as delicious as Dairy Milk or Snickers. It’s time we start eating real chocolates, and here are my five honest recommendations.

Five Healthy Chocolates in Indian Market

But before I reveal them, I want to assure you that this article is not sponsored by any chocolate brand. I’m just like you, a consumer who has a taste for chocolates but cares about health more. So, let’s begin the list:

1. The Whole Truth Badam Chocolates

The Whole Truth

If you haven’t tried “The Whole Truth” Badam chocolate, chocolate fudge bars, and their range of dark chocolates, then you are surely missing out. Their Badam chocolate is made with just four ingredients: 31% cocoa, 25% almonds, 24% date powder, and 20% whole milk powder.

Comparison with Five Star

Five Star has over 20 ingredients, but the main ingredient, cocoa, is not even 10%, while “The Whole Truth” has 31% cocoa. Badam is not just written on the wrapper, but 1/4 of this chocolate contains badam. The sweetness in “The Whole Truth” Badam chocolate is thoughtfully added using dates powder.

Price and Availability: The taste is normal, and with such quality ingredients, the price of ₹75 is a total steal. The best thing about Whole Truth chocolates is that they are available on platforms like Blanket and Big Bazar, making them easy to buy.

2. Santi Foods Dark Chocolate

Dark Jaggery Chocolate, Sante Foods

When I tried this chocolate for the first time, I was convinced it was the best replacement for Dairy Milk in the market.

Reasons:

  1. Taste: Even though it is dark chocolate, it is sweetened with jaggery and has ayurvedic herbs like Shatavari, Shankpushpi, and Brahmi, making it delicious.
  2. Price: 50mg of it is priced at ₹105. In comparison, you get 58gm of Dairy Milk Silk for ₹90.

Negative Side: This chocolate has a couple of emulsifiers, but at this price, it’s worth a bite.

3. Aadvik Foods Chocolate

Aadvik Goat Milk Chocolate

When I first heard of camel milk and goat milk chocolate, I was skeptical. But to my surprise, they are quite tasty. Goat milk chocolate tastes better than camel milk chocolate. Both have their own benefits, like increasing libido and height, respectively.

Ingredients:

Aadvik Foods Chocolate bars are made using organic cocoa beans, unrefined organic raw sugar, milk solids (camel or goat), roasted nuts, dried fruits, and natural vanilla flavor.

Price: Any Aadvik Foods Chocolate bar will cost you ₹225. It’s premium priced because the ingredients are premium, and chocolate is not something we eat daily, nor should we.

4. Anutamma Chocolate

ANUTTAMA Assorted Bar Dark Chocolate

This chocolate is made with A2 cow milk, which is superior to A1 cow milk. It is sweetened with khandsari sugar, and the quantity of added sugar is less.

Comparison with Dairy Milk

Dairy Milk per 100gm has 47gm of chemically refined sugar, whereas this has only 20gm of unrefined sugar. Made with just three ingredients—cocoa, A2 milk, and khandsari sugar—it is among the healthiest chocolates on the market.

Price: It costs ₹195 but won’t cost you your health.

5. Darkins

Darkins Dark Chocolate

If you are a dark chocolate lover, Darkins 56% dark chocolate is a must-try. It is not at all bitter and is appropriately sweetened.

Comparison:

Compare it with Amul dark chocolate or Cadbury Bournville, which have 44gm of sugar per 100gm. Darkins’ sugar source is organic, unrefined cane sugar, while the others are artificially flavored.

Price: This chocolate bar will cost you ₹265. It’s comparative to Ferrero Rocher and Lindt.

Homemade Chocolate Recipe

Now, let me share with you an amazing DIY chocolate recipe that is not only tasty but also very easy to make. All you need are five ingredients:

  1. Natural cocoa powder
  2. Coconut oil
  3. Milk powder
  4. Crushed nuts
  5. Desi Khand

Method:

  1. Use the double boiler method: turn the flame on and add coconut oil, milk powder, cocoa powder, and Desi Khand one by one.
  2. Whisk it well for about 10 seconds to get a pouring consistency.
  3. Turn the flame off and beat the mixture. The more you beat it, the smoother your chocolate will be. You can even blend the mixture.
  4. Pour it into a mold and refrigerate it for 1 to 2 hours. Your chocolate is ready.

Adding crushed nuts will enhance the taste, and you can feel the purity of eating a cocoa-rich chocolate made in just 2 minutes. It’s easier than making tea. The ingredients required for this chocolate are easily available in any grocery shop.

Cost: This bar of chocolate will cost you around ₹60.

Conclusion

You see, even homemade chocolate can’t beat the price of Five Star and KitKat because 1 kg of cocoa is ₹500, while 1 kg of invert syrup is just ₹15. So, eat this real chocolate and share your feedback in the comment section. Did you find your Top Healthy Chocolates in India.
